For this piece, I wanted to create a sculpture that celebrates both innovation and nature through my biomaterial practice.
I’ve always been drawn to forests, and found inspiration in the rings of a tree. Each ring marks another year of growth, telling the story of its life. Like a fingerprint or DNA, no two are ever the same.
That idea closely parallels my own work. Every biomaterial sculpture I create is hand-poured, hand-dyed, and hand-sculpted, making each piece entirely unique. There is always an element of unpredictability in the material—it naturally shifts, folds, and settles as it takes form. Rather than controlling it completely, I guide the process, allowing an organic language of form to emerge.
This vessel is made from my proprietary seaweed-based biomaterial. It begins as a two-dimensional sheet before being transformed into a three-dimensional sculptural form. The palette is intentionally understated, with soft neutrals, touches of horizon blue, and chrome accents inspired by Charles & Keith’s signature hardware—bringing together the natural and the manufactured.
Integrated throughout the surface are 30 organic tree rings, each representing a year of the brand’s journey. Small Roman numerals subtly mark the passage of time, celebrating three decades of growth, craftsmanship, and continual evolution.
Congratulations on 30 years, Charles & Keith.
