Caroline Zimbalist is an artist who blends fashion, science, and engineering to create one-of-a-kind works.  Moved by our impact on the natural world, in her collection ‘Landscape’ she reinterprets archival landscape images, distorting their colors and textures and re-sculpting them into three-dimensional forms.

Zimbalist constructs pieces by hand using nontraditional design processes and new textile techniques. As an artist, she is un-beholden to any single medium and often lets the materials dictate their final form. Her process involves pouring the acrylic paint on the ground with a base fabric and then adding the colors by dripping them into the mixture.  Specifically placing the colors in time, flow into one another and attach.  From there, she uses these organic shapes that formed to create her work.  She emphasizes the dominance, sublimity, and beauty of nature through biomimicry. By operating at the intersection of craftsmanship and chance, of art and science, and of the organic and the constructed, she is able to visualize the invisible, transforming the raw materials in her studio into textile-based sculptural objects that later become wearable pieces of art. This unique multidisciplinary approach allows her to experiment and to explore the natural world from within her studio.

She is connected to the contemporary critical dialog through post-naturalism theory, a term coined to describe organisms or environments whose evolutionary paths have been altered by humans. Her works embody our rapidly shifting landscape, envisions futuristic landscapes, and imagine its implications for the future.
